Office Desk Makeover and EJ's Giveaway

Posted by Devin

As most of you know, I just participated in a room makeover contest with EJ's Auction & Consignment making over my home office and I won! Woohoo! Today I am going to show you guys how I took an old desk I bought at the auction (for only $50, I might add) and turned it into a fabulous piece for my office. AND we have a great giveaway for a $100 Gift Certificate to EJ's at the end of this post so make sure to enter while you're here!

Here's what my desk looked like when I purchased it (minus an ugly, gray foam pad that was stuck to the top of it that I quickly peeled off):

The wood was pretty worn down and pitted on the top surface and the hardware on the drawers was very out-dated. But I loved the style and the shape of the piece and knew it could be a beauty with a little TLC. So first things first: sanding the desk down. I took a small, hand-held sander and did a quick, light sanding over the entire surface of the desk. Then, since the top of the desk had so many indentations, worn-away areas, and pit marks, I began to use wood filler to level and smooth the surface.

Using my putty knife, I worked the wood filler across the desktop, making sure to fill in all of the worst areas.

Once I was happy with my job, I let the wood filler dry and then re-sanded to surface again for a smooth and even desktop.

I then repeated this process with the drawers. The old hardware had worn a pattern into the wood so I had to use wood filler to create an even surface on the drawer fronts and prepare them for new hardware.

Before moving on to painting, I wiped the desk down with a rag and wood cleaner to make sure that all of the sand particles were removed and I had a clean surface to paint on. Once that was done, it was three quick coats of white paint on everything!

The last step to complete the desk was adding the new hardware to the drawers. I had a little help from my hubs for this part. He drilled the holed in the drawers for me and then I added the new pulls. I was a little nervous about messing up on the holes.

Hardware is like furniture jewelry so you have to choose wisely and I knew just what I wanted from the moment I spotted this desk. Don't the simple pulls look great?!

So now that I've shown you this awesome furniture makeover, I know you are all dying to run to EJ's to find your own amazing piece for your home, right? Well, you're in luck! Enter our giveaway below for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to EJ's! I hope our winner has as much fun as I had bidding at the auction and that you score an awesome piece!
