The Egg Stand

Posted by Devin

As many of you know, we started raising chickens for eggs in our backyard last Spring. Our boys quickly fell in love with our 8 little chicks and we discovered that chickens are really fun pets to have! The whole family has enjoyed watching them grow and playing with them in the yard, it has been such a fun project with the boys.

But somehow or other we quickly went from 8 chickens to 21! That's right, 21! We became the official chicken adoption family of the neighborhood and ended up taking in an extra 13 chickens. Whoa! We had plenty of room in our coop and plenty of boys to help take care and love on the extra chickens, but what, we asked ourselves, were we going to do with all of the eggs from so many chickens?! And that's when we had the idea for The Egg Stand. We decided to let the boys start their own little business selling the extra eggs. What a great opportunity to teach the boys about money, hard work, and running a business.

We bought the boys a little notebook to keep track of their sales and expenditures. It's awesome watching Connor (the self proclaimed money manager) learn how to balance a budget and keep track of an income. We also registered the boys with our state's Department of Agriculture to be official egg sellers and got signed on with a local Farmer's Market so they can have their own stand this Fall through Spring to sell their eggs. We can't wait!

We have been collecting egg cartons and the boys are now painting and decorating them to use for selling. After the cartons have been painted, they add a sticker with a custom stamp we got from Tiny Prints!

The custom stamp adds the perfect touch to their little egg cartons. It reads "The Egg Stand - Eggs From Chickens Who Are Loved - 85326." I love that they get to have their business slogan on there along with our zip code (got to represent, right?). The self-inking feature is awesome and the stamp design is just so cute! We plan on using the stamp for little business cards when the boys go to the market, as well.

Although we haven't started the markets yet, the boys are already getting plenty of business from family, friends, and members of the community who love fresh eggs from Nest Run chickens. There is actually quite a demand for these eggs! I am so excited about this great learning experience for the boys.
