Making a Formal Dress Casual

Posted by Devin

About 5 years ago I bought this cute little black and white dress for an adult prom I was attending. The dress was perfect for the prom, but... I hadn't worn it since. I loved the print and the style, but in the end it always felt too formal for whatever occasion I was considering wearing it for and it inevitably got passed up for some other outfit and left in my closet.

But lately I have been noticing various fashion bloggers and retailers showing dresses with button-ups over the top of them. Such a cute way to put a new spin on an old dress! I immediately thought of this prom dress and decided to give the look a try with my favorite chambray. I love the results! Nothing says "casual" like chambray, right?

To add to the more casual look and give the outfit a fun punch of color, I paired the dress with some yellow flats. Yellow has to be my favorite color to add to any black and white outfit.

I also added this fun new necklace Miss Tara Rae bought me from Forever 21. I fell in love with this necklace the moment I laid eyes on it. The giant bug locket is just so quirky and cool, I can't get enough of it!

What do you all think of the "button-up over the dress" look? I think I am sold and can't wait to try it with a few other dresses and tops!

And I have to mention one more item that gives this outfit the ultimate laid-back look: my new sunglasses! I received these from Annette of Fresh Pick Style and I love them! These South Beach sunglasses with their black frames and gold trim are the perfect addition to my outfit.

Thanks so much for stopping by! Make sure to come back next Wednesday to see what Tara will be wearing!

The print of that dress is gorgeous, and you're right, the chambray shirt on top works so well to make it more casual!

Wow! I love this look. I wouldn't have guessed this was a prom-style dress. You've dressed it down perfectly. I'm also wearing a top over cress in my post today. I've never tried a chambray shirt over one though. I'll be trying this soon.

Very cute concept! I've never tried this because I don't really wear dresses, but it looks like a great way to maximize your wardrobe. Love the color scheme you chose, especially the fun yellow flats. Thanks for linking up your look to Manic Monday! :)
